In Brief
Hybrid cloud is a cloud computing environment that uses a combination of private cloud combined with public cloud services with orchestration between various platforms. The principle behind Hybrid Cloud is to achieve a unified, automated, and well-managed computing environment by orchestrating between public and private cloud, and choosing the optimal environment for each application or workload.
For IT leaders, the benefits of delivering a consistent hybrid cloud are:
|
Operational Excellence: Reduced TCO, improved ROI, increased productivity |
|
Performance: Reduced risk and improved performance and reliability |
|
Accelerated Innovation: Faster time to market and increased business agility |
|
Better Customer Experience: Real-time data access, better customer satisfaction |
Considerations
It has become the norm for enterprises to deploy workloads across multiple public, private, and edge cloud platforms due to business strategy and technical requirements. To reduce complexity and accelerate business outcomes in this multi-cloud world, leading IT organizations are seeking to operate more cohesively with a consistent hybrid cloud, which requires a modern, cloud-ready IT infrastructure on-premises to reap the benefits of cloud at scale.
That all said, delivering a consistent hybrid cloud can seem daunting; it is a multi-year, multi-phased journey and requires a thoughtful plan to yield success. IDC conducted research to learn more about the obstacles organizations are encountering on this journey, how such obstacles are being overcome, and the outcomes that result. This research, which was sponsored by Dell EMC and Intel, reveals the business value of modernizing IT for cloud readiness and provides a roadmap for organizations to follow along the path to delivering consistent hybrid cloud, including key success metrics, investment areas, and peer-to-peer guidance. Follow this roadmap to see how you can take control of your clouds and continuously drive business value.

Applications
With the right setup, a hybrid cloud setup will maximise flexibility and efficiency for IT leaders to be in step with their business requirements. The applications of hybrid cloud are broad, and here we list some application examples:
Workload flexibility and optimisation. With a hybrid cloud setup, an enterprise can deploy an on-premises private cloud to host sensitive or critical workloads, and use a third-party public cloud provider to host less-critical resources, such as test and development workloads.
Dynamic or highly changeable workloads. As an example, a transactional order entry system that experiences significant demand spikes will work well with a hybrid cloud setup. The application can run a combination of private cloud, with cloud bursting for additional computing resources from a public cloud when computing demands spike.
Big data processing. A company can use hybrid cloud storage to retain its accumulated business, sales, test and other data, and then run analytical queries in the public cloud, to support demanding distributed computing tasks.
Cater for a mix of IT services. A business might run a mission-critical workload within a private cloud, but use the database or archival services of a public cloud provider.
Solution
IT Leaders must decide how and where to manage their organization’s most important capital asset, its data, while maximizing business value. To accommodate the more data-intensive workloads underlaying modern digital services, IT must deliver high performance on scalable and reliable modern storage infrastructures, including NVMe-based all-flash and storage-class memory (SCM) technologies. Modern, cloud-enabled storage provides faster and more secure data management.
PTC’s Hybrid Cloud implementations are powered with Dell Technologies Cloud, which combines the power of VMware software and Dell Technologies infrastructure to provide a consistent operating model and simplified management across public Cloud, private Cloud, and edge locations, eliminating silos through a single operational hub.
